 Great dumbbells for what i need. September 10, 2010

I ordered these dumbbells on Friday and received them on Saturday. I read all the reviews I could find about them. I decided it wouldn't be that big of a deal to me if the case was damaged in shipping as I had no intention of taking the weights with me anywhere. To my surprise, the case was packaged in a box inside a bigger box filled with packaging paper: My case was NOT damaged. Maybe Amazon changed the shipping method after all of the reviews. I am unable to speak to whether there is a smell on the weights as I have lost that sense a few months ago. Though I did not see a greasy substance on them or my hands after using them. They do take a little time to switch between weight on the dumbbells, but it's not so much that you need to warm up all over again. All in all, I think these weights are pretty good for starting out and if you need more weight, you can always purchase more plates. I will be purchasing another set so I can keep one on the heavy end and one on the lighter end so my switching between exercises can be faster when trying to keep up with a DVD.

At $34 including delivery this product seemed a worthwhile punt. However, rising to over $40, it just doesn't seem worth it. You can get much better sets that don't involve postage.
Essentially an average set, so I can't understand the recent price rise.

This is the third set of these I have purchased. The first set I bought at a local retail store for about 20% more than Amazon sells them for and that's not including tax. The reason I keep buying these is because it it less expensive for me to buy these sets with free shipping, than it is to buy the individual plates to increase the weight. Also, while it's not a big hassle to change plates during a workout, I like the flexibility of having three sets of varying weights, so I don't have to change plates as often. Another thing is that when you change plates there's a good chance the washer will come out of the collar and you have to take time to put it back in the groove.
Quality is so so. One bar has a rougher grip than the others and another one is much smoother - almost too smooth to get a good grip, so I use that one for the lighter weights. The plates are relatively consistent in fit and finish and so far I don't have any rust problems, even though I keep these on my deck outside under cover. Maybe that's why I haven't noticed the smell others have.
This last set (which is on the way) was <$39.00 and you just cant beat the price. All things considered, I would certainly recommend these to anyone that wants a decent dumbbell set at a great price with free shipping.

I bought this set to supplement my P90X workout. Although I would've liked more variety that single weight dumbells would provide, this set saves on space and money. The biggest trouble I have is switching the plates in a timely manner while keeping the DVDs running. The other minor negative is the lack of variety of weights but you can easily buy separate weight plates at your local sports store.
I've priced this set on other sites as well as the local stores and Amazon has the best price by far, especially with the free shipping right to your door! The case was in perfect condition and although there was some greasy odor, it was not suffocating. The bars are a bit rough on your hands so I recommend lifting gloves. Also, I weighed the dumbells myself and found that the bars are not 5lbs as listed--with the end caps, they weigh in at about 3lbs.
For what it is, this is a great value. When Amazon dropped the price 2 weeks after I bought it, I decided to invest in another set that stays at my boyfriend's place so I have no excuse to not exercise! (That set was exactly like the first, but cheaper!)
